DePuy Hip Implant Lawsuit
The DePuy ASR hip implant is used for hip joint replacement surgery. The ASR hip implant device consists of a metal cup and a metal socket. Due to the product's defective design, the contact between the two metal devices results in increased friction and early failure of the joint. This has caused many patients to require revision (re-do) surgery within just a few years of the initial surgery. Comparable hip joint implants lasts 15 years or more.
DePuy has admitted that there is a failure rate of 13% for the ASR hip implant cup device. The hip implant system was introduced to the market in the United States in 2005, and it is estimated that approximately 93,000 hip replacement surgeries have been performed using the DePuy ASR hip implant. Despite the fact there were signs that the hip implant system was leading to a high number of patient complaints, DePuy did not make the decision to remove their product from the market until March of 2010.
