Common car accident injuries that are preventable

In Colorado, car accidents are a major cause of serious injury and even death. A high-speed collision between two vehicles can cause serious damage to a victim's head, neck and spine. Even low-speed accidents can inflict serious injury, depending on the nature of the accident and the types of vehicles involved. However, many of these injuries can be prevented with some basic safety measures. Features like seat belts and airbags are designed to prevent these types of serious injuries.

Face and head injuries are especially common in car accidents. They usually happen when the impact of the collision forces a passenger's head to slam into the windshield or a window. Their face may get cut from the glass or the impact may break bones in their face. Passengers are especially vulnerable to this type of injury if they are not wearing their seat belt, which is designed to prevent this very type of injury from occurring.

Similarly, brain trauma can happen when an individual is violently thrown forward into a dashboard or a front seat. A seat belt is a good way to prevent such an injury. However, driving a car that has air bag protection can also prevent brain trauma. Leg injuries are common in car accidents and often happen when a person is sitting in a non-traditional position. Facing forward with both feet on the floor can help prevent serious leg injuries in a car accident.

Just wearing a seat belt can prevent many of the injuries that frequently arise from accidents. However, some accidents are so severe that even a seat belt can't prevent physical damage. In those instances, victims may suffer injuries that require ongoing treatment and care. They may also face hefty bills for medical care and for time away from work. Those facing such injuries may consider a personal injury suit against the party responsible for the accident.
