It is that time of year again here in Colorado. Winter weather could strike at any time, making the roadways even more dangerous than usual. One concern that many drivers have is the potential increase in accidents due to inclement weather. This concern may be even higher when it comes to the possibility of truck crashes.
Colorado drivers have reason to be concerned. Even in good weather, big rigs lack the maneuverability of smaller vehicles. They simply cannot evade some obstacles and circumstances and certainly cannot stop as quickly. This makes truck’s a significant danger when the roads are icy, snow packed or even wet.
Snowstorms followed by warm days means that snow may melt quickly, but it can then freeze due to colder nighttime temperatures. This pretty much causes heavily traveled roadways, such as Interstates 70 and 25, to become ice rinks. Large and heavy vehicles moving at highway speeds could easily become out-of-control projectiles moving toward unsuspecting motorists. Even careful truck drivers cannot guarantee that they will not lose control of their vehicles under certain circumstances. A truck driver who fails to heed the dangers presented by winter road conditions is even more dangerous.
Anyone who becomes a victim of an accident involving a truck this winter may end up facing a significant recovery period since injuries tend to be more severe for those who survive truck crashes. This extended period for recovery often means lost income, substantial medical expenses and other damages. Under these circumstances, it may be possible to pursue restitution that could help make up for these financial losses.
