A number of pedestrian accidents happen in parking lots

On Behalf of | Feb 7, 2019 | MVA/Car Accidents

Most Colorado residents think that the worst part of parking lots is finding the perfect space. In reality, these lots are also where numerous pedestrian accidents occur each year. Some of them result in serious injuries that can cause long-lasting difficulties for the victims.

Businesses are encouraged to design their parking lots in a way that helps keep traffic flowing smoothly and protects everyone in them. Even so, Colorado residents could take steps to protect themselves. Keeping one’s eyes open is one of the biggest safety tips. This means not being on cellphones or getting sidetracked to the point where someone could miss a distracted driver.

Pedestrians should also look out for any potential blind spots where a driver may not see them or they may not see a vehicle. Watch out for drivers backing up and not paying attention or attempting to pull into a spot quickly without making sure the way is clear. Try not to walk between cars either. It would be better just to treat parking lots like streets and use the same caution.

Even after taking precautions, there is no guarantee that a driver will not make a mistake. A pedestrian could still end up being struck by a vehicle and could suffer serious injuries or death. Recovering from such tragedies could take a significant amount of time and funds, which could cause stressful and frustrating financial hardship. In the aftermath of pedestrian accidents, those affected may be able to pursue restitution through the filing of a personal injury or wrongful death claim, depending on the circumstances.
