Driving fast can be an exhilarating experience. However, it is also a dangerous one and usually violates the law. In fact, some Denver drivers narrowly escape fatal motor vehicle accidents due to excessive speed. This does not mean that everyone walked away without injury since serious injuries often accompany these types of crashes.
On Feb. 16 at around 12:20 a.m., Demaryius Thomas, a wide receiver in the NFL, was driving here in Denver when a crash occurred. Police reports indicate that his vehicle flew through a 30 mph zone at a speed over 70 mph. Police made this determination by conducting a speed analysis and reviewing information from the vehicle. During the wreck, the vehicle flipped three times before finally coming to rest in a median.
In addition to Thomas, two other people were in the vehicle at the time of the accident. One of the passengers suffered serious injuries as a result of the impact. For this reason, Thomas now faces a felony charge of vehicular assault. A conviction could result in Thomas spending up to $100,000 in fines and up to three years in prison — and these are only the criminal repercussions of the charges and the accident.
The seriously injured passenger may decide to exercise his or her right to file a personal injury claim against the professional football player as well. Providing the court with evidence proving that negligence or recklessness on Thomas’ part led to the injuries suffered could result in an award of damages. For now, it may be enough that, unlike other potentially fatal motor vehicle accidents, he or she survived.
