Defective Royal Philips Respiratory Aids Linked To Serious Health Problems
For those who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, machines that aid in breathing can greatly improve rest, health and quality of life. Millions of Americans rely on continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and bi-level positive airway pressure (Bi-level PAP) devices to help regulate their breathing as they sleep. Most of these machines are very safe if used correctly. Unfortunately, however, some have proven to be dangerous or even deadly.
If you have developed chronic respiratory issues, cancer or other health problems after using one of the now-recalled devices manufactured by Royal Philips, you may be entitled to compensation in a product liability lawsuit. The attorneys at The Mahoney Law Firm, P.C., can help you understand your legal options and will fight to hold the negligent manufacturer accountable for the harms you have suffered.
Many Device Users Were Breathing A Toxic Substance While They Slept
Manufacturers of CPAP, Bi-level PAP and other respirators ask users to change their masks and tubing and to clean their machines regularly to avoid the risk of infections from any bacteria that may develop in the equipment. These are known risks with all such devices and can be controlled using the measures mentioned above.
The danger behind the Royal Philips recall wasn’t bacteria, however. It was a material used to dampen sound and make the machines run more quietly. Royal Philips used a certain kind of polyurethane foam known as PE-PUR that can degrade over time, releasing particles and toxic gases into the user’s air supply.
Royal Philips has been using PE-PUR for years, and some reports indicate the company may have known about the risks of degradation as early as 2015. The product was not recalled until mid-2021.
Harms Attributed To The Defective Devices

Patients from around the world have experienced a wide range of serious health issues that could be linked to breathing degraded PE-PUR from Royal Philips. These include:
- Dozens of cancers impacting many parts of the body
- Acute respiratory distress syndrome
- Various types of lung disease and lung damage
- Severe inflammation of throat, nose and ears
- Heart attacks and heart failure
- Chemical-related poisoning
- Respiratory failure
If you’ve used a Royal Philips device and have suffered any of these conditions, there may be a connection. It is a good idea to discuss the possibility with your doctor and to contact a product liability attorney like those at our firm.
